Acute Illnesses Q & A

What are acute illnesses?

Acute illnesses are those that cause symptoms for less than a month. An acute illness commonly appears suddenly, and symptoms may grow worse rapidly.

In most cases, acute illnesses resolve within a few weeks. Medical care at Washington Internal Medicine, however, can help shorten the duration of your illness and prevent it from recurring.

If you simply don’t have the time to be sick, or you’re feeling miserably uncomfortable, acute illness care is essential. You can visit the office for acute illness treatment, or you can schedule a telehealth visit to get treatment from the comfort of your own home.

What are examples of acute illnesses?

Acute illnesses are the most common infections, injuries, or undiagnosed health problems. Common examples include:

  • Common cold
  • Flu and other viruses
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Respiratory infections
  • Strep throat
  • Pain (abdominal pain, back pain, neck pain, or other issues)

These are just a few of the types of acute illness. In general, if new troublesome symptoms develop suddenly, whether related to illness or injury, Washington Internal Medicine can help.

How are acute illnesses diagnosed?

At Washington Internal Medicine, the diagnostic process starts with a physical exam and testing.

The practice offers an extensive array of diagnostic testing services, including food sensitivity testing, comprehensive nutritional analysis, ultrasound, genomic testing, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing.

The goal of diagnostic testing is to better understand the source of your symptoms so you can start the most effective treatment plan possible right away.

How are acute illnesses treated?

Your treatment plan is individualized for your illness. You may need medication, rest, a change in the way you eat, and other treatments.

Washington Internal Medicine respects each patient’s right to make the best choices for their own health, so your provider educates you regarding the root causes of your illness, treatment options, and long-term wellness care.

Chronic disease management is also part of your medical care, so if you have a chronic disease that’s causing sudden new symptoms, you can receive tailored treatment to better cope with the condition and fight off your uncomfortable symptoms.

Acute illnesses can last for only a day or two — but in many cases, they drag on for weeks. That’s why you need expert acute illness care at the first sign of illness. Call Washington Internal Medicine or click on the online scheduling tool to arrange your appointment.
