Telehealth Q & A

What is telehealth?

Telehealth takes advantage of the newest technology to connect you to Washington Internal Medicine virtually. Using a webcam on your computer or video chat on your smartphone, you can see the doctor without even leaving your home or office.

When might I need telehealth?

Telehealth is an easy and convenient way to access medical care in situations such as:

  • You don’t have the time for an in-person appointment
  • You can’t get time off work to travel to the office
  • You lack transportation to the office
  • You have a chronic condition that prevents you from leaving your home
  • You want to limit your exposure to other people

Telehealth is a remarkably easy way to get the medical attention you need, whether you require frequent appointments or only need to schedule acute care appointments once in a while.

What kind of services does telehealth encompass?

Washington Internal Medicine offers a number of medical services through telehealth, such as:

  • Acute illness or injury diagnosis and treatment
  • Chronic disease management
  • Preventive care
  • Medication refills
  • Lab test review after STD testing or other screenings
  • Hospital follow-ups

For some medical care, you still need to come into the office. With STD testing, for example, you need to provide blood and urine samples in the office. Or you may need to come to the office for treatment.

But, overall, you may be surprised at just how much of your regular medical care can happen from the privacy of your own home.

What happens during my telehealth appointment?

Because every person is different, telehealth visits are customized for individual needs. In general, the appointment starts with a medical history review and discussion of any current issues or symptoms.

In some cases, you may need to move the phone or webcam to better show the problem. For example, if you have an odd rash on your arm, you may need to zoom in on the skin.

For chronic disease management, you may need to share results of recent home monitoring, like your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.

If the main purpose of your telehealth appointment is to discuss lab results or imaging tests, you’re able to view the results as they’re explained to you in detail.

Telehealth appointments usually take around 15 minutes, although the duration varies depending on your needs.

Book your telehealth appointment at Washington Internal Medicine online or by phone.
